What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — and why it’s not SEO 2.0

GEO isn’t SEO with a new logo. It’s a different physics: AI engines synthesize one answer instead of returning ten links. We unpack what changes — and what stays.

The shift, in one sentence

In SEO, you compete for ten blue links. In GEO, you compete for three sentences. Sometimes one.

Search engines used to retrieve documents. AI answer engines synthesize them. The buyer never sees the ten pages — they see the paragraph the model wrote based on whatever it found, weighted by whatever it weighted.

That’s the whole game shift. Everything else is detail.

What stays the same

  • High-quality content still wins. Crap that ranked still doesn’t get cited.
  • Backlinks still matter — they’re part of how engines decide authority.
  • Brand reputation still drives the “named-in-the-answer” outcome.

What’s different

Tracking moves from rank to mention. Position-3-on-Google doesn’t exist in a ChatGPT answer. Either you’re named or you’re not. The metric is binary, the spread is brutal.

Content needs to be quotable. AI engines lift sentences — clean, specific, defensible. Long fluffy prose loses to short specific prose, always.

Publishing matters more. A great brief that sits in a Google Doc moves zero citations. The product that closes Track → Brief → Publish in one motion wins. (Yes — that’s what we’re building.)

How we think about it

The three jobs that need a tool today: track what AI says about you, brief the content that fixes it, publish to where buyers actually look. Most teams have one of the three. None have all three in one product. Until us.
